A fictional-based thriller by Harlan Coben

I read ‘Stay Close’ over a month ago and I just never got the time to do a review on it. But I have managed to spare 30 minutes to finally get it out of the way.

I am going to use a Fiction Book Review Template suggested by Ali Abdaal — he creates great content around productivity — check out his YouTube Channel when you have time. So, the book review…

What is ‘Stay Close’ about?

Stay Close is a typical thriller-based novel — guy meets girl and they fall in love but cannot be together because one thinks they are protecting the other. So Meghan, a stay-at-home mom was happily married to Dave and had two kids together. But Meghan is still madly in-love with her ex-lover, Ray, from back in the day when she used to be a pole dancer. Ray was a photojournalist but was not making a big bag from photojournalism, but the two were madly in love with each other regardless.

Another married man, Stewart Green, used to visit the club that Meghan used to dance at. Stewart really liked Meghan but would physically abuse her. Ray noticed this abuse and wanted to protect Meghan at all cost but did not know how. Unfortunately, Stewart got murdered in one of the parks that Ray used to take pictures at. Ray believed Meghan murdered Stewart, and Meghan thought Ray murdered Stewart. Meghan decided to leave pole dancing and start a completely new life in a different city in order to protect Ray.

Detective Broome and his team try to solve the Stewart Green murder when they notice a pattern of men dying on or around the 18th of February every year. The entire novel is based on trying to put pieces together regarding this pattern.

How I discovered it:

I just needed a hard copy-based novel and a friend of mine happened to have a couple, so I chose this one. Nothing hectic.

General thoughts:

In general, Stay Close is a great novel and sparks that curiosity in you that makes you want to continue reading. But I think the story-telling process is very confusing — there were some unnecessary characters as well that I think did not add that much value to the story. Other than this, I definitely enjoyed reading it but I learnt that fiction-based novels are not for me.

Who would like it?

Obviously, people that are into fictional stories and enjoy being held in suspense throughout the story-telling journey, Stay Close is for you.

In closing:
